A woman in California has staked a claim for the year’s best Halloween costume after producing a pitch perfect take on Marge Simpson from The Simpsons.
Fashion designer Kadejah Baylor took to social media to share the painstaking process behind her creation as well as the brilliant end results.
In a video which has racked up more than 2 million views on TikTok, as well as being posted on Twitter, the Oakland-based clothing designer explained that she decided to make Marge’s distinctive beehive hairstyle from scratch as she “didn’t see any appropriate wigs” when searching for one online.
Baylor visited a local beauty supplier where she purchased packs of blue hair along with some glue. She then set to work sticking the hair to a large foam cylinder which sat on top of her head as part of another blue wig.
In addition to the wig, she also spray painted a mock white pearl necklace red to match Marge’s signature style on The Simpsons.
The results were subsequently presented in a follow-up video showing Baylor in her Marge Simpson costume, complete with the character’s familiar green dress.
In the clip, Baylor mimes along to an extract from “Scenes from the Class Struggle in Springfield” the fourteenth episode of The Simpsons‘ seventh season where Marge attempts to ingratiate herself with Springfield’s elite after buying a discount Chanel suit.
The video, which can be viewed here, has garnered over 250,000 views on TikTok and has been watched more than 1 million times on Twitter.
Speaking on the first of the two videos, Baylor explained she decided to share the clips of her costume way ahead of Halloween as she “couldn’t stand” for people not to see it until October 31.
That decision appears to have been vindicated given the response online. “This is a masterpiece,” nevscanvas declared on TikTok. Tony Gould was in agreement, writing: “She understood the assignment.”
For Joshbigosh the wig was “everything,” while Graciebee branded the costume “the most perfect Marge I have ever seen.” Sinister_deer, meanwhile, noticed: “The wig looks like it’s about to fall over,” to which Baylor replied: “Oh it did!”
Newsweek has contacted Baylor for comment.
According to Vanessa Van Edwards, a behavioral investigator with Science of People, your choice of Halloween costume can actually say a lot about you as a person. In this instance, Baylor’s costume puts her in the category of “funny gal.” Van Edwards says people in this category “like to bring joy to the world.”
“Bringing a smile to people’s face is the best part of your day,” she writes. Van Edwards notes that, on another level, funny costumes are also about vindicating or “proving to people how funny you are.”
The Marge Simpson costume represents the second time in a matter of days The Simpsons has ended up going viral for unexpected reasons.
In the previous instance, a game show contestant came in for ridicule online after confusing the ancient Greek poet Homer with Homer Simpson.
While Baylor’s costume represents one of the year’s best, she could face some competition from a young girl’s equally inspired Toy Story slinky dog outfit.
