The 4 best Easter decoration trends for 2021

Easter is a celebration of hope and positivity: for many, a symbol of the end of winter, and the promise of summer days to come. This year, we need that lift more than ever. Gatherings of six people or two households are permitted in private gardens from tomorrow, and as the first ‘event’ of the year, it’s an opportunity to bring fresh, springlike colours into the home and garden, get creative with your decor, and turn Easter weekend into a proper occasion.

The joy of Easter decorating is that you get to deck out your home without the stress associated with Christmas – which is why Easter-themed decor has become a growing trend, and December traditions have been given a spring twist, from pastel-coloured crackers to the emergence of Easter trees.

You may not decide to go that far, but crafts inspired by the arrival of spring are a lovely way to entertain children. It could be as simple as making some paper chains in sugary shades to string from shelves, painting eggs to make a centrepiece for the table, or arranging a bouquet of dried flowers. The key is to take inspiration from the light, bright mood of the season, and finally close the door on what has been a very long winter.

Start with the table

Spending time setting the table will turn a meal into an event – whether you’re inviting friends into your garden or having a festive family brunch. ‘Spring is the time of reinvention, so why not try a floral tablecloth and bring those seasonal tones into your tablescape, with matching florals for the full effect?’ says event designer Alice Wilkes. Stylist Melanie Lissack suggests using soft pastels rather than bright colours ‘to create a sophisticated Easter table that isn’t too childlike’, and mixing in accessories made from natural materials such as hessian, rattan and jute. ‘Paint ceramic eggs with old tester-pot paint and add an eyelet name tag for a personalised place setting,’ she adds.
