Prince Charles Launches a Limited Edition Luxury Wool Scarf

Prince Charles recently launched a sustainable clothing collection—and now he has helped design a wool scarf. Sources say the Prince of Wales has been “heavily involved” in choosing the colors and design for a luxury limited-edition scarf, which is being released for the 10th anniversary of his Campaign for Wool.

The £150 unisex scarf has been created in collaboration with the sustainable brand Mother of Pearl and manufactured by Johnstons of Elgin, and is available in three color combinations. Saying he was “delighted” to mark the wool organization’s anniversary in this way, the Prince also took the opportunity to comment on the textile production process and the need for it to change.

“It is abundantly clear to me that we need to make changes to the way we think about the production, use and the disposal of clothing and textiles if we are going to get anywhere near to meeting the United Nations climate change goals set for the industry,” the Prince said in an online statement. “A major part of that change has to be moving from a linear system to a circular one, where textiles and clothing are produced sustainably, enjoy long use, and are made using materials which will biodegrade naturally and quickly at the end of their useful life.”

Needless to say, the Prince’s new scarf has been produced to highlight the sustainability and durability of wool. The wool blended to make it has come from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. The Prince also said: “Wool’s sustainable and biodegradable properties provide a unique natural option for us all to reassess for environmental values and purchases. We need to put nature at the heart of how we operate and to evolve our economic model, putting people and planet at the heart of global value creation.”

Chief Executive of Mother of Pearl, Amy Powney, who helped design the scarf, shared how the design “began appropriately by looking at The Prince of Wales check, adding a twist to its classic design and affirming its natural wool composition with jacquard text.” She added: “I hoped to merge classic with modernity, to celebrate what we should take from the past and what we need to do to safeguard our futures.”

Prince Charles launched the Campaign for Wool in 2010 to educate consumers about the benefits of wool, promote wool-rich products to a national audience and help to support and grow the wool industry.

The Campaign For Wool’s 10th Anniversary scarf is available to purchase via NET-A-PORTER and the Mother of Pearl and Johnstons of Elgin websites starting today, with profits going to The Prince’s Foundation’s Future Textiles initiative.
