Sioux Falls is overflowing this season with cheer ahead of the year-end holidays.
Although Thanksgiving isn’t past just yet, there are plenty of events scheduled to celebrate the season right after.
Take a stroll through Falls Park’s annual Winter Wonderland, watch colorful floats drive by in the Parade of Lights, attend tree lighting ceremonies throughout the city and watch animals open their Christmas gifts at the Great Plains Zoo.
Here’s a list of just a few events to help you celebrate:

1. Winter Wonderland at Falls Park
Kick off the holiday season by driving or walking through Falls Park as more than 270 trees and 275 light poles are lit up with lights and decorations. The annual event uses more than 25 miles of string lights and 40 wreaths for the event. You can tune in your radio to FM 97.7 to listen to festive music that goes along with the lights while you drive through the park.
2. Christmas at the Western Mall
When: 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. each night from Nov. 25 through Jan. 1, 2022.
Where: Western Mall
Cost: Free-will donations
View a new light show set to festive music in the Western Mall’s center court this holiday season. The former light display was canceled in 2019 and didn’t return for 2020, but will come back this year with free-will donations supporting Make-A-Wish South Dakota.
3. Parade of Lights & Christmas Tree lighting
When: 7 p.m. lighting, 7:30 p.m. parade on Nov. 26
Where: The Washington Pavilion and Phillips Avenue between 13th and 5th Streets
The 29th Annual Parade of Lights will bring lights, floats and music to downtown Sioux Falls. Floats are encouraged to follow a theme this year of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” The lighting of the Washington Pavilion’s 45-foot Christmas tree will kick off the evening with live music, free cookies and hot cocoa.

4. 2021 Jingle Bell Run

5. Menorah Lighting Ceremony
When: 5 p.m. on Nov. 28
Where: Empire Mall
The Empire Mall will host a menorah lighting ceremony near Nestle Toll House Café and Vision World, celebrating the eight-day Jewish celebration of Hanukkah.
6. Minnesota Avenue Christmas Tree Lighting
Join the First United Methodist Church as they light a pine tree along Minnesota Avenue to usher in the Advent season. Known as “Dorothy’s Tree,” Dale Weir bought the 60-foot evergreen tree for his wife decades ago as a Christmas gift to light annually. The two passed away several years ago, donating their tree to the church. In addition to the annual lighting ceremony, attendees will sing carols at the site.

7. ‘A Christmas Carol’
Follow along as The Premiere Playhouse presents “A Christmas Carol,” the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser visited by the spirits of Christmas. The show is suitable for all ages, though children 2 and younger are free if they sit on a ticket holder’s lap. Purchase tickets and view showtimes online.
8. Christmas with the Animals
Santa will be making a stop at the Great Plains Zoo to drop off presents for animals — and he set aside time to meet with children about their Christmas wishes, too. Kids can meet with Santa, partake in a reindeer food creation station, write letters to Santa and chat with zookeepers at the annual event. The first 750 children who meet Santa will get a cookie decorating kit from Twisted Sisters Sweetz. Order tickets online, which vary by age and membership with the zoo.
Visit “Fallsville” at the Sioux Falls Convention Center for the first-ever Grouchmas event, which will benefit 10 local charities ahead of the holiday season. Bid on stockings full of goodies that will benefit local charities like the Humane Society, Embe, McCrossan Boys Ranch, Children’s Home Society and Compass Center.
10. Christmas with the Symphony: ‘Tis the Season
Listen to classic holiday tunes mixed with the “magic of Broadway” in this family-friendly experience. Buy tickets and view showtimes online.
11. 25th Annual Christmas at the Cathedral
This year’s theme of the classic Sioux Falls holiday tradition is “Be Born in Me” as a first-hand account from Mary of “God’s Incarnation into the human race.” Buy tickets or view scheduled showtimes at Sioux Falls Hy-Vee locations or online with donations going toward the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House.
