Did Instagram copy me? After congressional hearing, a startup founder wonders

Emilee Geist

Back in 2014, Andrew Cunningham thought he and some colleagues had a hit with a smartphone app to create short bursts of reversible video.

These days, if Cunningham wants to use his old app, it might be easier to pull up Instagram. The Facebook-owned photo-sharing app has an almost identical feature called Boomerang, which people use to create videos of streams running backward or friends doing backflips in reverse.

Cunningham has long suspected that Instagram copied Boomerang from his startup, which after all was based in Australia, home of the original boomerang hunting tool. His app, called RWND, didn’t last long after Boomerang came on the scene in 2015, a year after RWND.

“You wake up one day and the magic that you’ve got has been baked into another product,” said Cunningham, who’s based in Melbourne.

It was all ancient history in the fast-moving world of tech startups until last

Summer may seem like a great time to host a garage sale at your home, but the coronavirus pandemic has made group gatherings a bit more challenging. “Hosting a garage sale during a pandemic can be a great way to purge all the clutter and keep your mood high,” says Brandi Radulovich, host of Eternal Harvest Décor on Smart. Healthy. Green. Living. “Luckily, it can be done easily with just a few small changes and proper safety practices in place.”

How do you go about hosting a garage sale in the midst of a global pandemic? For starters, Nancy Fire, former HGTV design director and owner of Design Works International, says new protocol needs to be mandated—and followed. “No more than 25 people should be present in the same space at any time, including the person(s) hosting the sale,” she explains. “Consider setting up the sale

Lucid Air Full-Sized Luxury EV Will Have an Astounding 517-Mile Range

Emilee Geist

From Autoweek

Lucid, one of the few electric car makers that looks like it’ll actually produce an electric car, announced this morning that it expects to get a range of 517 miles when the EPA certifies the range of its luxury car later this year.

517!

That is way more range than any competitor, even Tesla. Back in 2017 when we got a ride around Las Vegas in an early build of the Air, Lucid was claiming a range goal of 400 miles, which was a lot for 2017. But even by 2020 standards 517 eclipses all the competition. How did Lucid do it?

“Efficiency,” said company CEO Peter Rawlinson. “The really important thing here is we haven’t done it with a humungous battery.”

Rawlinson said any carmaker could get big range figures just by adding an absurdly huge battery pack. The Lucid Air will have “less than 130 kWh”

Audi continued its model offensive by introducing the European-spec version of the next-generation S3. Unveiled online, it offers more power than its predecessor, a sharper-looking design, and better in-car technology.

Again offered as a hatchback named Sportback and as a sedan, the S3 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged to 310 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. For context, the outgoing model’s 2.0-liter engine posted figures of 288 and 280, respectively. The turbo four spins the four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission called S-Tronic in Audi-speak and the company’s time-tested Quattro all-wheel drive system.

Audi pegs the S3’s zero-to-62-mph time at 4.8 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Its mission isn’t merely to go quickly in a straight line, however. It also gains a model-specific suspension that’s about half an inch lower than the A3’s, speed-sensitive steering, and

All while keeping the planet’s wellbeing in mind.

What do you wear when you’re looking for a memorable ‘fit for a socially-distant outdoor activity? More often than not, it’s a brightly-colored set that boasts a fun pattern and easily moves with you. Bobblehaus, a new New York-based label launched by two Chinese-Americans this past spring, ticks those boxes, all while keeping the planet’s wellbeing in mind and building a community that embraces interactive ways of understanding multiculturalism.

Abi Lierheimer, the creative brains behind the operation, describes the brand as a marriage between fashion and utility. At first glance, the clothes — which are released in small batches and are inspired by the youth cultures of New York and Shanghai — could be grouped with popular streetwear brands like Champion or Stussy. But when we spoke about the first collection over the phone, Lierheimer made it clear that she doesn’t want

Emilee Geist

Anyone interested in product design has likely heard of the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) traditionally held in famous Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately, the event’s organizers have recently announced that the 2021 edition of the show would look much different than in years past. Not just figuratively or literally speaking, but virtually, taking on an all-digital format in the wake of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) made the announcement in July 2020, a full six months before the January show. On one hand, that means attendees need not worry about airfare and hotel rooms. On the other hand, it means preparing to observe, disseminate information, and make purchasing decisions entirely online.

Traditionally, the show is set up like any other type of trade exhibition, with rows of booths manned by product specialists ready

Body-positive advocates discuss inclusive swimwear shopping tips and best picks

Emilee Geist

“Fun in the sun” feels a little different this year, but it hasn’t stopped many of us from finding the perfect swimsuit for a dip in a backyard pool or a vacation in the foreseeable future.

While people search far and wide to look for options that are beach-ready every summer, finding size-inclusive picks isn’t always an easy task — especially with many fitting rooms remaining closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The average American woman wears between a size 16 and a size 18, according to a study by the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education. Yet, most stores carry traditional straight sizes which range from 00-12. Fashion influencers agree that the limited options that are left make looking for swimwear even more daunting than regular clothes.

“I think that many designers are still afraid to jump on the inclusivity train,” model and advocate Hunter McGrady told “Good … Read More
