The 8 Best DJ Sets of July 2020

Emilee Geist

Every month, Philip Sherburne listens to a whole lot of mixes so you only have to listen to the best ones.

We’re halfway through this strange, unsettling year, and the outlook for electronic music isn’t looking any better than it was when the pandemic first shut everything down four months ago. Some promoters, festivals, and DJs have tried to pretend things are reverting to normal—which pretty much everybody agrees is a terrible idea—while others are crowdfunding just to stay in business. (The Berlin-based DJ Eric Cloutier articulated something that’s probably on a lot of musicians’ minds when he recently predicted, “I don’t think many, if any of us, will be DJing in clubs ever again.”)

Happily, the proliferation of online mix series in the last few years means that the art of the DJ mix itself is more versatile—and more portable—that you might expect. This month’s best mixes encompass

Near-Term Prospects Look Bright for Toys & Games Industry

Emilee Geist

The Zacks Toys – Games – Hobbies industry comprises companies that design, manufacture and sells various games and toys. While traditional toymakers primarily focus on marketing and selling action figures, accessories, dolls, youth electronics, and arts and crafts, some of the industry participants also develop and market content and services on video game consoles, personal computers and mobile.

Let’s take a look at the industry’s three major themes:

  • Although coronavirus-induced shutdowns have hurt most industries, toys makers have been benefiting from the pandemic. With kids stuck at home, parents have been buying toys in bulk to keep the children occupied and away from the TV while they work. While toy buying spree continues across the country, online sales of board games and building sets have also been on the rise. Hasbro, Inc. (HAS) is witnessing strong gaming demand amid this crisis scenario. The company has a strong gaming portfolio, and

Christian Siriano’s getting the government support he needs to continue producing PPE.

Early on at the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March, Siriano, 34, became the first fashion designer to step up and announce he would be using his manufacturing resources to create protective masks for frontline workers. Now, as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a plan to award a total of $6.9 million in incentives to companies to continue making equipment, Siriano’s fashion firm was one of the 12 selected.

Per Cuomo’s announcement, one of Siriano’s companies, CJ Designs, is receiving $352,590, according to a report from Women’s Wear Daily. The money will be put towards manufacturing more face masks for nonmedical public service employees as the state prepares for a potential second wave of coronavirus in the fall.

“Siriano quickly changed the scope of his high fashion Manhattan

The coronavirus pandemic has meant that face masks and coverings will become part of daily life. The UK government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have both advised wearing face coverings in a bid to reduce the infection transmission of Covid-19.

Since 24 July, face coverings have been mandatory in all shops, supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, banks, post offices and transport hubs in England. People who don’t wear one will face a fine of up to £100, apart from people with medical conditions and children under 11.

Boris Johnson announced an extension to these rules in a government briefing on 31 July. From 8 August, face masks will become compulsory in more indoor settings where you’re likely to come into contact with people you don’t normally meet,

America’s new yard sign discourse

Emilee Geist

The Twin Cities are bursting with political yard signs.

They’re not campaign signs — those are tellingly few. I’ve seen more faded blue holdovers from 2016 than support for presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden or President Trump. No, the signs dotting my neighborhood and absolutely swarming the next neighborhood over aren’t about voting, per se. They’re about policy, principles, identity, and they’re almost entirely left-wing. While I’ve never been fond of the phrase “virtue signaling” — its contempt is often unfair — used literally, it’s an apt description of what’s happening in our metro’s front yards.

I decorated my college-era car with bumper stickers, but when that car died, my political signage impulse went with it. Though hardly shy about my views, I’ve never considered a yard sign. The people around me may have very different politics from mine, and I worry this sort of impersonal political engagement might
